Here is the spectacular view today of Catalina Island from William Wrigley's home, Mt. Ada, named for his wife. The pier at Avalon harbor is where the S.S. Catalina docked, first unloading Cub pitchers and catchers. Wrigley always had a band waiting to celebrate the Cubs' arrival. Rookie Berly Horne was hoping for his big break here, never having been west of Illinois. The Casino (the oval building with the red roof in the right background) opened in May 1929, too late for the Cubs to enjoy during spring training.
